Judge Dredd appears to be a mishmash of other movies, Blade Runner, Total Recall, and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, with a dash of Star Wars tossed in for good measure - but its not - This is Dredds world, this is Mega-City One! Like the Fifth Element a few years later, Judge Dredd
depicts a futuristic megalopolis packed with crowded vertical overgrowth and rampant commerce, where anarchy reigns supreme.
Violent block wars are fought by lawless citizens with machine guns, and Judge Dredd (Sylvester Stallone) is one of the citys heavily armed policemen, called Judges, given free rein to judge and execute the perpetrators of violence. But Dredd himself is subjected to judgment and swift justice when his own gun is identified in the murder of a prominent TV reporter, forcing him to do whatever it takes to clear his name.
Diane Lane plays his partner in crime-fighting and eventual romantic interest, Rob Schneider provides juvenile comic relief as Dredds streetwise sidekick Fergie (a terrible corruption of the character from the comic). The impressive special effects still don't make up for the fact its got Stallone as Dredd, and that it is faithful to the comic in places (Hammerstein is great), it is also very lose elsewhere (I can see your face Dredd). However if we complare it with many of the comic book adaptions over the past twenty years, it could have been an awful lot worse! Thirteen years on, I still enjoyed it, Dredd it isn't, but Mega-City One it is :)
The script is here... And here is the trailer...
