In Sunshine, we learn the sun is dying and the earth is slowly freezing over. It follows the second spaceship sent to re-ignite the sun with a nuclear package the size of Rhode Island, and save the Earth. The crew is a realistically multi-national group of specialists, a very healthy community of upcoming Hollywoods best. Also, not without surprising performances from Troy Garity (the white dude in Barbershop) and Chris Evans (Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four).
What seems like any easily cliched premise is masterfully done over by director Danny Boyle who brought us 28 Days Later and Trainspotting, and writer Alex Garland who wrote 28 Days Later. Boyle personifies the dying sun with shots of it silhouetted against a black, empty space. It becomes an intoxicating symbol for the crew, whose mission strains their relationships and performance. You never doubt the validity of the crew or the concept of their mission. This story is driven by beautiful visions Boyle has created in space. He takes the light from the sun and draws you in like a moth, all at once dazed and awed by the power it holds. The closer they approach the sun, the greater the pressure becomes to perform, until they come across the first spaceship!
Sunshine seemed familiar to me, and I've worked out why - 2001 A space odyssey! Many scenes reminded me of Kubricks masterpiece! It wasn't a bad movie, some scenes where edge of the seat stuff. I know this movie didn't do so well in the box office or with the reviewers, I'm unsure why, I liked it, but I did find myself looking at the clock occasionally! Here is the homepage.
I collect DVDs, we have over 3,000 titles in the house now! I buy most from Car Boot Sales,Poundshops, markets, sales, and greatly reduced from the internet, but I only buy what I want to watch! I do a short report when I watch them, I got rid of almost 800 titles at Christmas 2010 (low score, duplicates, ones I'd never watch etc.) I continue to wade through them, and appear to be buying slightly less, but still watching like mad :)
