The Classic tale of Frankenstein is set in the late 18th Century, after the death of his mother Caroline (Cherie Lunghi), Victor Frankenstein (Kenneth Branagh) leaves his father (Ian Holm) and Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), the adopted sister he passionately loves, to attend university. He becomes obsessed with the teachings of Professor Walman (John Cleese) who believes that life can be restored to the dead.

One electrifying night, Frankensteins efforts are rewarded as his Creature (Robert De Niro) struggles to life. Alone, despised and driven by the rage of its emotional agony, the creature decides to find its maker, and so begins the nightmare that will engulf Victor Frankenstein and those around him.

Mary Shelleys Frankenstein is the best retelling of the 1931 classic I have seen, and is thoroughly recommended.
